What is BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny)? 八字

BaZi — literally "Eight Characters" — is a 1,500-year-old Chinese astrological system that maps the cosmic energies present at the exact moment of your birth into four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour.

Each pillar consists of two characters: a Heavenly Stem (天干, tiāngān) and an Earthly Branch (地支, dìzhī). Together these eight characters encode the balance of the Five Elements — Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水) — as they existed in your birth moment. This elemental fingerprint is believed to reveal your innate character strengths, potential challenges, ideal career paths, relationship dynamics, and the broad arc of your life fortune across decade-long luck cycles.

The Day Master (日主) — Your Core Identity

At the center of every BaZi chart is the Day Master: the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. The Ten Gods system categorizes every other element in your chart relative to your Day Master. Each relationship — Wealth Star, Officer Star, Resource Star, Companion Star, and Output Star — describes a specific area of life: money, authority, support, peers, and creativity. Luck Cycles (大运, Dàyùn)

Unlike Western astrology's annual solar return, BaZi introduces decade-long luck pillars called Dàyùn. Zi Wei Dou Shu — Purple Star Astrology — is often called the "king of Chinese astrology." Originating in the Five Dynasties period (907–960 CE) and attributed to the Taoist master Chen Tuan, it maps over 100 named celestial stars across a chart of twelve palaces, each governing a distinct life domain.

While BaZi analyzes elemental balance, Zi Wei Dou Shu is architectural — it builds a palace chart unique to your birth year, month, day, and hour, then distributes all major and minor stars across twelve houses. How Our Calculator Works

We use rigorously validated astronomical libraries to convert your Gregorian birth date to the precise Solar Calendar (节气, jiéqì) used in Chinese astrology — not the Western solar calendar, which introduces errors in BaZi calculations.
